Economic Profile

Mobile on the Move. Mobile continues to build a vibrant environment for business as it focuses on growing its economy through diversification and investment in its assets. The region has successfully moved away from its dependence on traditional paper and chemical industry core to a center for high-end manufacturing, logistics/distribution, technology, healthcare, finance and education in the U.S. Gulf Coast Region. However, the success of its resident businesses has assisted in attracting new investment to the area. German steel manufacturer, ThyssenKrupp, scheduled for production in its first U.S. plant in 2010, and Berg Steel next year, will dramatically increase high-end steel production in the area.

At a recent Economic Forecast Conference hosted by the University of South Alabama, presentations made indicated that the Mobile area economy should continue to grow at the pace it has for the last 5 or more years with increases in many industry sectors. This growth is due to the continued attraction to the area for its workforce, low cost of operating a business, and quality of living in the community.
